Research summary
Over the last two decades there has been a marked increase in the amount of research focussing on resilience, the ability to adapt and survive in the face of adversity. This research is becoming of increased interest to those involved in policy and practice because of its potential impact on health, well-being, and quality of life. To date little research in relation to resilience has been conducted with people who have a diagnosis of dementia.
This study aims to develop a grounded theory of the concept of resilience in people with dementia and it is hoped this will illuminate the experience of resilience, how it is fostered /maintained and developed and how it impacts upon the experience of living with dementia. It is hoped this understanding will be used to inform and enhance future service provision.
Design:
The proposed study will employ a qualitative research design using Charmaz’s (2014) version of grounded theory. Grounded theory is a qualitative research method which involves forming a theory based on the data which has been gathered.Procedure:
Patients who agree to participate in the study will be interviewed on one occasion. Interviews will be conducted within the participant’s home or an NHS clinic setting, whichever is considered most suitable by the participant and their carer, and according to their preferred time and date. The interviews will be conversation-based, semi-structured, and will last up to one hour. An interview schedule will be employed comprising a small number of open-ended questions. The participant’s answers, reflections, and ideas are then likely to raise further probing questions.Recruitment
This study will seek to recruit between six and twelve participants who will be patients who have attended the memory clinic which covers NHS Forth Valley and have received a diagnosis of dementia of any type from their psychiatrist.REC name
