Research summary
Sexual thoughts have been suggested to lead to sexual behaviour, and therefore, most of the treatment for sexually harmful behaviour includes a part focussed on sexual thoughts. However, sexual thoughts of children or non-consenting adults are not only experienced by those who commit sexual harm. Men in the general population are known to experience these and when they do there is often no desire to act on these fantasies. This study is focussed on exploring the experiences and perceptions of individuals who engage in these interventions for sexual thoughts and the practitioners that deliver these to gain insight into their perspectives on the benefit of this work and how it does or doesn’t help in managing and treating sexual thoughts of children or non-consenting adults. There is increasing recognition that client and practitioner experiences are particularly useful in understanding what works and for whom.
As such I hope to interview practitioners and clients to explore their experiences of current interventions for sexual thoughts of children or non-consenting adults. This will focus on interventions accessed/ provided, what has been most effective for them and any changes they have made. I plan to recruit practitioners and clients across settings including hospital, HMPPS and community.
