  • Research summary

The aim of this study is explore patient’s experience before and after engagement in a weight management programme focusing on Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM) remission. More and more interventions are being designed for patients diagnosed with T2DM, but understanding what patients value most from such programme, and what is important to them potentially beyond weight loss and T2DM remission would help to provide professionals with clarity on how to structure programmes, motivate patients and help patients achieve meaningful and personalised goals from such interventions.

The researchers will interview two groups of patients from a Tier 3 Weight Management Programme, in NHS Lothian, Scotland. The first group (around 8-12 people) would be interviewed before they begin the programme or in the very early stages of when they start. The participants who agree to take part in the research would be asked questions around what they expect from the programme, what they are hoping to achieve and what their goals are during and after the programme. The second group of people who will be interviewed (8-12 people), will be those who are near the end of their intervention, and they will be asked similar questions, on what their expectations were at the beginning of the programme and what they valued from the programme. Interviews will be held using an online video platform, audio recorded and then typed out for the next stage of analysis.

The interviews will all be analysed using Interpretive Phenomenological analysis, which is a way to identify similarities and differences in peoples experiences and explore them in more depth. Then the findings will be written up in a thesis and research article format. This research would fill a gap in the literature because it would provide insight into patients journey before and following engagement of a weight management focused on T2DM remission.
