Research summary
Recently the Laser in Glaucoma and Ocular Hypertension (LIGHT) trial concluced that selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT), a form of laser used to lower eye pressure in patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertesnion, is a safe, efficiant and more cost-effective option to eye drops. Since the publication of these results more clincians are offering this laser treatment to patients and there have been discussions around the possibility of the treatment being delivered by optometrists in the future. This study will bring together information from a number individuals (ophthalmologists, optometrists, hospital managers and patients), aiming at understanding the enablers and barriers of introducing an optometrist delivered SLT service, as well as the need for further research into the efficacy, safety and cost-effectiveness of such a move.
