Research summary
Suicide is a global issue, with 800,000 people dying by suicide per year, and around twenty times this amount attempting suicide annually. Evidence has shown that it is possible for suicidal experiences to reduce in strength and intensity, and that some individuals can recover from suicidality. Despite this, there is limited evidence known about what specific factors can reduce these suicidal states. What is more to our knowledge, there have been no studies exploring naturally occurring factors or moments of reductions in suicidal states.
Therefore, this study will aim to explore naturally occurring moments where thoughts and behaviours of suicide are reduced. Participants in the study will include people who have recently experienced these suicidal states and have been under the a Home Based Treatment Team for longer than one week.
Participants will be asked to complete diaries three times per day asking about reductions in suicidal experiences. This is to capture reductions of suicidal states in everyday life, and to help participants bring back memories in the interview. This is important because memories of such events can sometimes be forgotten or misremembered. Participants will also complete an interview which will explore moments recorded in the diaries.
Understanding what can help people to reduce thoughts and behaviours of suicide could help to inform interventions in the future, for example within services such as Home-Based Treatment Teams.
