Research summary
The study I propose aims to gather qualitative data from biological children of parents who experience sudden or regular mood disturbances. Individual semi-structured interviews will be used to facilitate exploratory conversations with children of such parents about how they understand and manage their own mood. Participants will be young people between the ages of 11-18 years who have regular contact with at least one biological parent that self-identifies with experiences of frequent mood disturbances. The study will aim to gather data from a minimum of 1 participant and recruitment will cease at 20 participants or once data has reached theoretical saturation. Participants will be recruited via a mixture of identifying potential participant’s parents from adult NHS mental health services within 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and via non-NHS organisations and support groups, such as the Spectrum Centre or Bipolar UK, and via social media, such as Twitter. Data will be analysed using a grounded theory approach.
