Research summary
Research into men's experiences of an eating disorder is scarce. The current study therefore aims to add to the qualitative literature regarding the development of eating disorder’s in males and how they understand the function and maintenance of the disorder. This has clinical significance as a better understanding of the development; function and maintenance of ED’s in males could help to inform decisions regarding treatment interventions. This study aims to build upon existing research by using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) to carry out an in-depth analysis of men’s understanding of the development function and maintenance of an ED. 6 - 8 participants with a diagnosis of an eating disorder will be recruited from specialist eating disorder services within Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Partnership Trust. They will be asked to consent to take part in a semi-structured interview lasting approximately 60 minutes. The interviews will be carried out at the treatment base where the participant receives treatment.
