Research summary
This application concerns a doctoral research study exploring inequalities in the access to and utilisation of genetic and genomic services from the viewpoint of service users and service providers. It is funded by the Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care - North West Coast (CLAHRC NWC) and undertaken in partnership with Liverpool Women’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust(LWHT). Evidence has shown that factors like ethnicity, gender and level of education may affect whether or not people attend genetic services. We would like to conduct some interviews with the people who use the genetic service and those who provide the service to find out what issues they think influence the access to and utilisation of the genetic service.
The interviews will facilitate finding out from the participants, possible solutions for improving access to the service. Interviews will be conducted at the LWHT premises or at the participant's home if they so choose. One interview per participant, lasting no more than one hour, will be conducted. Data collection is scheduled for a period of up to six months. There will be no direct benefits to the participants interviewed. However, the findings of this study are of importance in that they will help to inform how the service can improve on its accessibility and consequently improve the uptake of the service. It will also help future patient groups needing to use the genetic service. The results from the study will add to the evidence base around the subject area.
