Research summary
Over the past decade the reported number of cases of obesity have been continuously rising, and a large proportion of those cases have been related to weight gain during pregnancy. There is a traditional view that once pregnant, a woman is ‘eating for two,’ however this view can have detrimental effects for both the mother and the child. Therefore, it is paramount that healthy lifestyles are promoted and supported during pregnancy.
Despite the importance of this topic, there is a lack of research surrounding the impact of weight gain during pregnancy and the behavioural factors that influence it. This proposed research hopes to reduce the gap in the literature by focusing on women enrolled in a lifestyle programme, Mamafit. It will explore their motivations, thoughts, feelings and expectations surrounding their pregnancy and their lifestyle behaviours. This will be done by conducting individual semi-structured interviews with pregnant women who have recently enrolled on the Mamafit programme. The results will help to inform progression of Mamafit and provide guidance for other healthcare settings.REC name
