Research summary
Obesity in the UK is a growing problem and the use of bariatric surgery to help individuals to lose weight is being offered more frequently within NHS and private sectors. The procedure can hold promising outcomes in addition to risks associated with operating a person with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or more. The implications of undergoing bariatric surgery can be great for both the individual and their family. The current study aims to use qualitative research develop a greater understanding of couples' experiences of bariatric surgery, when one of the couple has undergone the procedure. The study will investigate two main areas of interest; expectations of the couple and experiences of change following bariatric surgery. The findings will be used to inform bariatric teams about supporting patients and partners through the process of bariatric surgery by disseminating the ideas shared by the couples.
