Research summary
The aim of the proposed research is to begin to address the gap in evidence around experiences of compassion within the care home environment, via the exploration of resident, family, care-worker and management experiences. This will be done through a series of unstructured interviews with study participants. Study participants will be recruited from the ten care homes that will be part of the study. Each interview will last one hour and will be recorded and subsequently transcribed. Data from the transcripts will be analyzed under grounded theory using constant comparative analysis. (Urquhart, 2013) The codes, categories and major themes that emerge from the analysis will be further reviewed to identify additional concepts and constructs that may be of interest within the context of the study. The study team: involving the PI, research supervisor and care home representative will assemble at least three times during the course of the study to review, collate and agree upon the categories and major themes that emerge from the narratives. As the study will be one of the first to look at compassion within elder care homes in the Highlands and across a range of stakeholders within the care environment, it is hoped that it can inform future work related to evaluating and improving compassionate care. The findings of the study will be published in high impact peer-reviewed journals as well as shared with care home staff in the Highlands and in Scotland.
