Research summary
This study will find out if patients with fractures affecting their knee joint develop pain that is centrally mediated. Centrally mediated pain is pain that this out of proportion to a stimulus and is affected by the brain and spinal cord. This will be done with the use of questionnaires, both digital and paper, that will be sent to patients who have experienced these injuries. These questionnaires will assess centrally mediated pain. The results will be used to determine which patients will be invited for further assessment. These assessments will include clinical examination, pain testing in the form of quantitative sensory testing, further questionnaires on knee function, mood, and centrally mediated pain. This information will be used to determine if centrally mediated pain is a common outcome after knee fractures and will guide further prospective work.
