  • Research summary

The mental health needs of people with Profound and Multiple Learning Disability (PMLD) are poorly understood by Mental Health professionals. Research in this area is extremely limited and progress in this area of research will help services to better meet the needs of people with PMLD. The purpose of the current research project is to improve understanding about the mental and emotional health needs of people with PMLD. In order to achieve this, the inclusivity and recognition of carers is key to helping professionals understand the mental health needs of this client group. This will be done by exploring the views and experiences of family carers of people with PMLD in order to address the research question ‘What are family carers perceptions of mental health needs in people with PMLD?’.

The research will be a qualitative study and family carers known to the Learning Disability Team in North Wales will be invited to take part. Taking part will involve an audio recorded face to face interview to explore carers views and experiences of caring for someone with PMLD, in particular, the mental health of the person that they care for. Audio recordings will be transcribed and anonymised. This data will then be analysed using Thematic Analysis to look for shared themes.

The research is being conducted by Tracy Dennis (Trainee Clinical Psychologist) in partial fulfilment of her Doctoral Studies with the North Wales Clinical Psychology Programme (NWCPP), Bangor University. The NWCPP will be funding the research. The study is being supervised by Dr. Jon Willis (Clinical Psychologist, based at Greenacres LD Team, Wrexham) and Dr. Mike Jackson (Clinical Psychologists, based at Bangor University).
