Research summary
The aim of the research is to explore and develop positive experiences of values based practice in a Mental Health acute ward using appreciative action research.
This study is relevant to patients, carers, staff and the public for the following reasons:
1) Research into practice in Mental Health acute wards is often focused on negative experiences and on what went wrong as opposed to what went well.
2) In the literature, descriptions of care delivery evidencing values based practice do not take account of the voices of all involved (for example, focusing only on the experience of the nurse rather than the patient).
3) Where patients and carers perspectives are researched the results identify a gap between policy and practice-limited research around this has been carried out in inpatient settings.
This study will use appreciative action research to discover how positive experiences of values based practice can be identified and cultivated. The data from observations, interviews and focus groups will be used to instigate a cycle of change to further develop positive experiences of values based practice.
Eligible study participants would include:
1) Inpatients of an identified mental health acute ward and identified by the PI and NHS care team as being able to take part.
2) Relatives/ carers of people who are in an identified mental health acute ward
3) Staff and students who are working in an identified mental health acute ward
The study will take place in an Acute Inpatient Ward in NHS Lanarkshire
The study will last 12 months and participants could be involved in a combination of the following:
• Observation (ward staff and students only)
• Focus groups
• Individual interviewsREC name
