Research summary
Growing up with a disability can have a significant impact on self-esteem, confidence and social participation. Research has shown that children with a predominately one-sided motor impairment involving impairments in voluntary movements through weakness, spasticity, paralysis or dyskinesis (e.g. hemiparesis/hemiplegia) are particularly vulnerable to social and emotional difficulties impacting on engagement in therapy programmes and outcomes. This study will build on our previous work aiming to develop effective interventions for these children but move beyond a focus on movement skill acquisition. The project will take advantage of a number of clinical programmes, that are now being implemented as a result of our research, to invite children and families to participate in the study. In addition to the baseline information and clinical (motor) assessments that will be undertaken as part of clinical programmes, We will invite children and parents to complete two additional questionnaires, one short rating scale and a short 3 minute task. These will consider the effects of disability on social emotional development across different age groups, and the impact of intensive motor learning programmes (camps, clubs and or intensive home based interventions) on performance, participation and well-being for children and young people with unilateral motor impairments.
