Research summary
Chronic cough is a very common condition affecting approximately 10% of the population. In adults, chronic cough is a cough with a duration of 8 weeks or longer. People living with chronic cough have said they have lots of symptoms and the cough makes them anxious, low in mood, embarrassed, socially isolated and it affects them carrying out everyday activities. Currently, there are no licensed medications to help chronic cough in the United Kingdom.
Research in chronic cough in the past has mainly tried to describe the experience of individuals with chronic cough using numbers obtained through questionnaires. A recent piece of research highlighted only a very small number of studies have explored chronic cough by interviewing patients and reporting what they say.
The same piece of research also suggested that chronic cough may impact more than just the individual living with the cough. It has suggested that those who have a close relationship with an individual with a chronic cough may be impacted too.
This study therefore aims to conduct interviews with 6 individuals living with a chronic cough and 6 individuals who have a close relationship (living in the same house) as an individual with chronic cough such as a spouse, partner or child over the age of 18.
The aim is to gain an understanding on how chronic cough affects individuals and those closest to them. The results of the study will be presented using the words of the living with chronic cough and of those who live in the same household as someone with chronic cough.REC name
