  • Research summary

One of the issues surrounding management of of T2D is compliance with care. There is strong evidence to suggest that compliance is strongly related to preceptions of the quality of care provided. It is important that we have a good understanding of the issues that impact on the perceived quality of care for individuals with T2D diabetes. This is by its very nature a complex and multifaceted issue, but what is clear is that nurses, who increasingly have the most significant role in providing the long-term care, make a significant contribution to this perception of the quality of care.
However, as the role of the nurse has changed in relation to T2D care, it is unclear which aspects of their role are most significant to the patients perceptions of care. Therefore, this study seeks to evaluate the role of the nurse in relation to T2D care and to determine which aspects of the role have the greatest impact on patient’s perceptions of care.To gain a wider understanding of roles nurses play in contemporary T2D care, across a range of settings, their roles and impact on care will be studied within two different models of nationalised healh care, namely the NHS in the UK and the MoH within Kuwait. Whilst it is anticipated that some nursing roles will be similar, the level of autonomy of the nurse within Kuwait is significantly different. This will impact on their roles and potentially on the patients perceptions of nursing care.

The study will adopt case study approach, with case studies collected in both the UK and Kuwait. The strength of the case study approach is that it allows integration of information from range of sources so to gain understanding of the phenomena in question, in this case the roles of nurses and perceived impact on the quality of nursing care.
