  • Research summary

The current study is being proposed in the context of well researched and documented literature in the context of role of nurses in diabetes clinics. It is mainly about the different approaches in managing type 2 diabetes that have impacted the quality of care and how these approaches perceived by healthcare professionals and patients. As a result of differences in global healthcare systems, nursing care for type 2 diabetes (T2D) may vary across countries, as a result the ways in which nursing practice is organized, as well as other contributing factors. Some healthcare systems are nurse-led models, which are patient centered, whilst others still adopt a more traditional physician-led model reflecting a more medical model of care. However, in practice, little is known about the specific roles that nurses play within these various models, the effectiveness of the various aspects or how patients value these various clinical contributions to their care.

This study will, therefore, investigate two case studies of T2D across two countries, namely Kuwait and the UK, both of which have nationalized healthcare systems. It will explore how T2D is managed in both countries and will review the roles played by the nurse in each of the case studies. It will further explore nurses’ and patients' perceptions about how each aspect of these roles contributes to the quality of nursing care. In fact, this research will employ a case study design, which will incorporate multiple methods of data collection including qualitative interviews, observations, and documents review. Thus, the purpose is to investigate the role undertaken by diabetes nurses in diabetes clinics in two countries and explore the impact of perceived quality of nursing care in T2D.
