Research summary
This study will use qualitative methodologies to explore the idea of hope from the perspective of people with dementia. It will ask people directly about hope, rather than asking nurses, as in Cutcliffe (2001) and will seek to understand the views of younger people with dementia about hope, rather than older people as in Radbourne (2008). It will also make use of photo diaries not seen in either of these studies. It will seek to understand whether participants believe hope is helpful, where it comes from, and what helps and what hinders their hope, be it the actions of individuals, society or their own ideas and coping strategies. With this knowledge it will be possible to inform and improve the care delivered by staff working with people with dementia in community settings.
