Research summary
A systematic literature review has suggested that experiences of stigma within the Type-2 Diabetes (T2D) clinical population negatively impacts health behaviours and ultimately diabetes outcomes (Brod, Kongso, Lessard, & Christensen, 2009). With a better understanding of these experiences and resistance to self-management of T2D, clinicians may be able to devise strategies to reduce barriers to adherence. This could lead to an improved quality of life for patients (Warren, 2004), a reduced likelihood of developing long-term health complications (Baghbanian, & Tol, 2012), and in turn, it will impact the budget and resources the National Health Service will require for diabetes care. Currently, there is limited in-depth and detailed qualitative accounts of patients’ experiences in the literature. This study aims to gather qualitative data using semi-structured interviews exploring patients' experiences of living with and self-managing T2D. The one-to-one interviews will last approximately 45-60 minutes.
