Research summary
17 – 50% of newly diagnosed cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment experience changes in their ability to maintain attention, recall and process information. This is known as cancer related cognitive dysfunction (CRCD. Origins of these changes are unclear, with some research suggesting they may be linked to chemotherapy treatment itself. However these changes have also been identified before treatment begins. To gain a better understanding of CRCD, pre-treatment/during treatment/post treatment measurements need to be taken at numerous time points. Measures typically used for assessment of CRCD are time consuming and not appropriate for frequent use during treatment, especially if patients are fatigued. A newly comprised test battery of standard measures that target specific effected domains reported in literature, which can be administered in less than thirty minutes, would be more advantageous for frequent testing. A pilot study is required to identify if this patient group would be accepting of the new shorter test battery to be administered pre-treatment, during treatment and post treatment.
