Research summary
Cognitive analytic therapy (CAT) was developed in the 1980s as an integrative and time-limited psychotherapy, suitable for the health service due to its short-term, focused nature. A relatively recent evolution in CAT includes the development of ‘five session CAT’ consultancy, first developed in Hull and Sheffield. Five session CAT consultancy is an extended assessment and formulation of a service user’s difficulties using CAT principles, co-developed with the service user and Care Coordinator (CC) alongside a CAT Practitioner. A psychological formulation is a hypothesis about an individual’s difficulties and by developing this jointly with service users and CCs, five session CAT aims to develop a shared understanding of difficulties, which can then be used to inform future interventions. Five session CAT was developed with individuals with significant interpersonal difficulties and co-morbid mental health issues, who may have struggled to engage with services and work towards their goals. Five session CAT may offer a way of understanding current difficulties and developing meaningful and individualised care plans for these individuals and those they are working with.
This study aims to explore the experiences of five session CAT from the perspectives of service users and CCs. Participants will be interviewed about their experience of five session CAT consultancy, exploring their experiences before and after the sessions, and their experience of the process of five session CAT. Participants will also be asked to complete pre- and post-five session CAT questionnaires, looking at therapeutic relationship and also personality integrity for the service user participants. Participants will be drawn from three CMHTs in the North East of England. Currently, there is little research exploring the process of five session CAT consultancy and it is hoped that this study will contribute to greater depth of understanding of the process for service users and for CCs.
