Research summary
The proposed study will look at the experiences of women who undergo prophylactic (preventative) mastectomies following BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 (breast and ovarian cancer susceptibility) gene diagnosis. The study aims to understand the experiences of these women during surgery and life after surgery through the use of semi-structured interviews. It aims to answer the following questions:
- What is it like for women to undergo prophylactic mastectomies?
- Does this experience impact their psychological well-being or cause distress?
- If so, in what ways and how is this experienced by these women?
- What is life like and how is it different for women following prophylactic mastectomies?
Participants for this study will be women aged over 18 who have had a prophylactic mastectomy within the last five years, at least three months ago, and who are diagnosed with the BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 gene. Participants will be recruited from local NHS trusts and will each undergo a single, 1-2 hour interview with the researcher which will be recorded, transcribed and analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis.REC name
