Research summary
The NSPCC Coping with Crying film has been developed to provide parents with information about why babies cry, how to cope with crying and also explains the effects of shaking a baby. This film has been shown widely across the UK to new parents and has been found to improve parent’s knowledge about crying, use of coping strategies and the dangers of shaking their baby. So far it has not been shown to parents of babies born prematurely or who have spent time on a neonatal unit, even though the literature shows that these babies often cry more than term babies and are at higher risk of being shaken. This study will therefore show the NSPCC Coping with Crying film to parents on the neonatal unit prior to their baby being discharged home, and explore whether it is appropriate, useful and feasible to do this. This will be a qualitative study where interviews of nurses and parents will explore their experiences of watching the film.
