Research summary
There was a recent high profile AWOL (absence without leave) of a patient on the medium secure unit. There was considerable media attention following this. The hospital staff experienced some heated debates from the local population.Patients had their external leaves suspended due to safety concerns.
This project aims to administer a stigma questionnaire to describe the type and level of stigma experienced by patients and staff , who live and work in the forensic mental health setting. It further aims to gather their own perspectives of the effects of stigma on their lives in a medium secure unit through a semi structured approach.
One part of the study also will examine media material and attempt to construct themes using two independent groups as analysers. This material will be used in part to open up the discussion on how stigma in the media has affected patients and staff.REC name
