Research summary
The proposed study is an exploration of the personal experiences and meaning of relationships and interactions with others for adults with psychosis. Data will be analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Research into difficulties with social functioning is relevant as the difficulties appear to precede the onset of psychosis but can also predict long term outcome. However, there is not much literature on personal and individual accounts which this study is proposing to explore. Therefore, this study will give individuals the opportunity to explore their personal experiences, and the team a more detailed insight into the experiences of their service users. It may benefit the service as the findings may offer suggestions as to how interventions and support may be developed to improve social functioning.
Ten participants with experiences of psychosis, will be recruited from Leeds and York Partnership Foundation Trust. First the participant will be interviewed about the important people in their life and their experiences of interacting with others. This should take up to 45 minutes. Next they will complete a task called ’The Hinting Task’ which tests their ability to understand others’ intentions. This should take approximately 10-15 minutes.
The plan is for participants to be seen between April and December 2014. The Hinting Task and proposed semi structured interview are included in this document.REC name
