  • Research summary

Research question: How do individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) experience receiving a neuropsychological explanation of AN? An IPA study. \n\nThis study aims to find out what individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN)think about receiving a brain-based explanation of AN and to understand how they make sense of this information. This is important because people with AN are receiving new treatments that are based on a brain-based explanation of AN and so far there has been limited research into what people with AN think about this experience. In order to provide effective psychological interventions for AN, it is important that these interventions are acceptable to and make sense to people with AN. \n\nThis study will recruit 10-12 people over the age of 18 who have a diagnosis of AN and who have received a brain-based explanation of AN as part of a cognitive remediation intervention at the Eating Disorders Service, Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. This is also where the study will take place. Consenting participants will take part in an hour-long semi-structured interview, which will be audio recorded and transcribed. The interview transcripts will be analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), which is a framework for analysing written information commonly used in the social sciences. \n\n
