Research summary
Research on palliative care and end of life care reported that there is an increased interest for people with chronic conditions and their family carers to receive health care at home. People with cancer are considered to be a major group who receive this type of care. In light of the challenges faced by many family carers in managing their situation, an effective support system should be present to enable them to deliver optimum care to the person with cancer while at the same time, preserving their physical and psychological well-being. The current research literature indicates that there is a need for more studies on how family carers experience formal support while providing palliative care at home for a person with cancer during the last year of life. Studying their experiences will help to address their concerns about how support should be provided considering the varying needs of family carers and patients. This will help in achieving their desire for care and death at the preferred place. Therefore, the aim of the study is to explore the experiences of a group of family carers of people with cancer who are receiving or have received home-based palliative care services during the last year of life through conducting up to fifty single one to one qualitative interview with family carers to ask them about their experiences.
