  • Research summary

Many children and young people are diagnosed with cancer each year. Luckily, there are many effective treatments available for young cancer patients meaning that they have a better chance of fighting this disease. Therefore, more children are found to be cancer free once they complete their treatment, meaning in many cases they can return to their typical routine and lifestyle. Research has found that it can be difficult for parents or carers to support their children not only after diagnosis and during treatment, but also at the end of treatment when their child no longer has cancer.

This project hopes to use 60 minute interviews to explore primary carer's experiences of supporting their child at the end of cancer treatment, whilst readjusting to their own lives. We also aim to explore the information and support needs of primary carers by establishing what primary carers accessed at the end of treatment and whether or not this was helpful. By finding out more about primary carer's experiences, we can hope to improve the information provided about what to expect after treatment and develop different types of support which can help families affected by cancer for this specific time point in their child's cancer journey.
