  • Research summary

Functional neurological disorders are poorly understood conditions where people experience neurological symptoms, that are not caused by known neurological diseases (for example Multiple Sclerosis or Parkinson Disease). They are instead thought to be the result of temporary changes to how the brain is working. There are different types of Functional Neurological Disorders. This study is interested in Motor type Functional Neurological Disorders (mFNDs), for example those where people experience tremors, weakness or dystonia in their limbs. \nIt can be difficult to live with mFNDs due to the persistence of symptoms and some people can experience mental health difficulties. Even though the condition can come along with disability and distress, there is limited qualitative research on mFNDs. We aim to interview people with a mFND to learn about their experiences of living with the condition. \nThe research could show how patients make sense of their experiences and this information could support healthcare professionals to find other treatments to support the individual. This research may also help us to understand and think of ways to address the stigma associated with mFNDs.\nResearch Question: What are the experiences of people living with mFNDs? \nMETHOD\nDesign \nWe will interview 6-10 adults who have a mFND. Two recruitment sites have been identified; in that, if site A (NHS neurological service) is unsuccessful in reaching recruitment numbers then site B (Charity) will be approached. Participants will contact the researcher if they wish to participate. Depending on the recruitment site, interviews will either be face to face or via telephone and recorded using an encrypted Dictaphone. The interviews will be typed out and analysed to look for themes in what is said. \n
