Research summary
Colorectal cancer (cancer of the colon and rectum, also known as the large bowel) is the third most common newly diagnosed cancer in both men and women, and is usually treated with surgery. Surgical treatment can be life-changing, with a number of side effects. The research student is interested in the experiences of these patients around the time of diagnosis and through to the period after surgery. This will hopefully support healthcare professionals to provide high quality information and support to patients who have had surgery for colorectal cancer. The research student will conduct interviews with participants 4-6 weeks after they have been discharged. The research question is 'What are the experiences and perspectives of patients undergoing surgery for colorectal cancer?'.
This study will focus on patients over the age of 18 who have been diagnosed with colorectal cancer at the research student's place of work, who have capacity to consent, can communicate in English and are comfortable discussing their diagnosis and treatment. The participants must be able to use virtual meeting software as this is how the interviews will be conducted. The interviews will commence once the research student has ethical approval and consent and the final study will be submitted as a dissertation in September 2022.REC name
