  • Research summary

The focus of this research is the experiences of the parents/guardians of children with cancer who are admitted to hospital for inpatient chemotherapy treatment to be administered to their child. Consideration has been given in the local unit to the development of a nurse led pathway for paediatric chemotherapy admission and assessment in the hope that the pathway can be streamlined. Innovative nurse led chemotherapy administration pathways appear to be welcomed in practice however evidence to support their effectiveness is currently lacking.

On average 240 children are diagnosed with a malignant condition within the specified region, approximately 25% of these anecdotally receive inpatient chemotherapy as part of their treatment regime. A poster will be displayed on the inpatient ward over a two week period asking interested parties to contact the researcher directly. 6-8 parents/guardians will be recruited from the target population of planned chemotherapy admissions to the designated ward.

Due to the previously unexplored nature of the topic, parents/guardians will participate in individual interviews (a grand tour question accompanied by an introduction/conclusion and, where necessary, interviewer prompts will be used to structure the interview).

It is anticipated that the findings of this study will inform a wider project which is looking to improve the pathway children and their families follow as they are admitted to hospital for planned chemotherapy. The researcher will transcribe and code the interview data herself to ensure confidentiality is maintained and assist in the qualitative analysis of the data.
