Research summary
This research aims to consider how and why Orthodox Jewish parents from the Stamford Hill community have accessed tier 2 CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service) in Hackney, given that there are a number of potential barriers to accessing such support.
I am interested to know what factors contributed to parents seeking support from outside of the Orthodox community, given that previous research has shown that families are most likely to consult family members or community leaders for advice. Research has also shown that there are high levels of stigma about mental health in the Orthodox community. I am keen to consider how levels of stigma may impact on help seeking behaviour and whether this stigma relates to particular concerns about accessing a “mental health” service for children.
I hope to explore this by carrying out 8-10 semi-structured interviews with Orthodox-Jewish parents who have accessed the service. Interviews will last for 50-60 minutes in a private setting of the participants choice. Interviews will be audio recorded and will be transcribed.
Participants will be recruited from the tier 2 CAMHS service in Hackney. Should recruitment in this service be difficult, recruitment will also take place in the Hackney CAMHS learning disabilities team. A member of the CAMHS team will contact potential participants to ensure they are happy to be contacted by a researcher who is not part of the CAMHS team. Parents will be informed that whether they chose to participate or not will have no effect on their child’s care. When all interviews have been completed and transcribed, thematic analysis will be used to analyse interviews in detail and to draw together any common themes.
