Research summary
The pain management team at the Walton Centre, Liverpool are looking to further understand factors that contribute to the maintenance of gains made on the pain management programme following completion of the programme. The research will involve interviewing 6-10 participants who have completed the pain management programme up to twenty four months previously. All individuals who complete the programme are deemed to have made gains by the team. Those individuals who do not make progress or gains, do not complete the programme. Therefore, individuals who have completed the programme will be contacted via letter by a member of the pain management team. This letter will ask participants to telephone the researcher or complete the expression of interest form if they wish to partake in the study. This will subsequently be followed up by another letter in two weeks time. The participants who choose to opt-in will interviewed individually and their data transcribed by the researcher. The transcribed data will then be analysed using a thematic analysis approach to identify common themes across the data set.
It is anticipated that the results from this study will enable strategies to be developed that may enable gains to be maintained for longer; such as having an on-line social network that discharged patients can use to maintain relationships and social networks that they developed on the course. A summary of findings will be presented to the pain management team upon completion of the project.
