  • Research summary

The proposed investigation will look at service users who are taking Buvidal medication. Buvidal is a relatively new treatment which was approved in UK in 2019. It is a prolonged release Buprenorphine injection which is used as an Opioid Substitution Treatment (OST). OST is a drug treatment used to reduce or eliminate the use of opioids (predominantly heroin) in people who are dependant by replacing the heroin with an oral drug (a different opioid) such as methadone.
The focus of the proposed investigation is to investigate whether the change to an prolonged release treatment option has influenced the user’s perception of their self-determination, to assess whether the change in treatment option has an influence on the ability to refuse drugs in high risk situations, and to examine any difference in life experiences and change in wellbeing as a result of the change in treatment.
