  • Research summary

Research indicates that there is a lack of robust literature exploring the experiences of ethnic minority service users in acute mental health services. Considering that previous literature has established ethnic minority service users are more likely to present to services when acutely unwell, more likely to be detained under the Mental Health Act, and are more likely to have negative experiences of mental health services (e.g. systemic racism, lack of culturally appropriate and holistic care). It is imperative to further develop our understanding of ethnic minority service user experiences and consequently how acute mental health services can provide effective and appropriate care. Considering the breadth of services within acute mental health, the current study proposes to investigate the experiences of ethnic minority services users within a home treatment team specifically, due to no current literature being identified regarding this
    area.

The proposed study aims to utilise a qualitative approach, in the form of semi-structured interviews, while service
users are under the care of the Coventry home treatment team. Participants who belong to an ethnic minority, are at least 18 years old, are willing to engage with the interview, are not likely to be at increased risk due to participating, and can provide informed consent would be interviewed by the Chief Investigator. The interview would be up to 1 hour, will be audio recorded and take place in an NHS setting. Results would then be transcribed and analysed using an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis approach. The implications of these results would be considered in terms of how to improve ethnic minority service user experiences within home treatment team settings.
