Research summary
Low levels of health literacy have been linked to poorer self-management of chronic illnesses and poorer health outcomes. It has been acknowledged as the biggest predicator of health and is most likely to exist in areas of high deprivation and low educational attainment, meaning it is an important social determinant of health. This is a major consideration for exploring how patients perceive the delivery of health information.
To better understand how patients engage with health information this study wishes to explore the personal experiences of patients with Type II Diabetes receiving health information in a primary health care setting, namely their own GP Practice.
To do this a qualitative research study will be initiated with a small purposeful sample from a single primary care practice in an area of high deprivation. Semi-structured interviews will be carried out with the consent of the health board, clinical lead and patient sample. This will be underpinned by Van Manen’s phenomenological framework to focus on the patients’ lived experiences.REC name
