  • Research summary

    Background:
Research highlights inequalities in people from minority ethnic communities receiving a diagnosis of dementia and a lack of assessments that are culturally appropriate and validated adds to this challenge. Research suggests cognitive tests underestimate cognitive abilities in people from minority ethnic backgrounds. This can be exacerbated by fears of racism and mistrust within medical systems. Whilst research highlights anxiety around participating in memory tests little is known about people’s experiences of culturally adapted memory assessments.

The Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination (ACE-III) is a test of cognitive functioning which is widely used in memory clinics as part of the assessment for the presence of dementia. Bradford Memory and Assessment Service (MAS) have culturally adapted the ACE-III into Urdu and Hindi and currently uses these measures.

    Aim:
To explore service users’, family/supporters’ and staff members’ experiences of culturally adapted cognitive assessments within memory services.

    Methods:
Service users and their families/supporters will be identified by NHS staff at Bradford MAS following a culturally adapted ACE-III. Participants can find out more about the project before or after the appointment.

Participants will include people identifying as from the south Asian community who have undergone the Urdu or Hindi culturally adapted ACE-III at Bradford MAS. Staff will be identified via Bradford MAS, and also be involved in administering the culturally adapted ACE-III.

Interviews will take place with up to 8 service users and family/supporters of service users, and up to 5 staff members. Interviews will focus on experiences of memory services and the use of culturally adapted assessments.

    Outputs:
The interview data will be used to gather information around acceptability and utility of the adapted ACE-III and potential practice improvements for cultural adaptations in memory assessment services. The findings will be shared locally and nationally to inform future care planning and delivery.
