  • Research summary

Bowel screening aims to reduce deaths from bowel cancer by early diagnosis and by removal of pre-cancerous polyps. In Wales screening is available for 60-74 year olds using a stool test every two years. Following a positive test, participants are sent for a screening colonoscopy (bowel camera procedure) to investigate. Complex polyps may be identified during a screening colonoscopy. There are different procedures that can remove complex polyps. One is an operation (surgery), another is removal during a colonoscopy. Deciding which is best can sometimes be difficult and some procedures require the colonoscopist to be specially trained. In Bowel Screening Wales a group of clinicians discuss complex polyp cases and advise treatment. Not only might the type of procedure recommended vary for individuals, but also the location of the procedure may vary (local or in Cardiff). This study aims to understand patient experiences of having a complex polyp(s) removed and the possible influence on quality of life. This will be done by asking people who have had a complex polyp removed recently to complete a quality of life questionnaire and take part in a research interview about their experiences and quality of life. The study also aims to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the complex polypectomy service, so the quality of life questionnaires along with participant healthcare records will be used to calculate quality-adjusted life years. Finally, using short answer questionnaires the study aims to understand what screening colonoscopists think about complex polypectomy service. Responses from all participants will be used to improve the service.
