Research summary
This research study will explore and seek to understand the experiences of young people who are admitted to a mental health inpatient unit and attend the horse riding group run by the Nursing and Occupational Staff within the unit. Many of the young people have different mental health issues such as psychosis, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorders and eating disorders and it is hoped that the study will understand how attending the group has affected their recovery.
The specific aims are to explore young people’s experience of taking part in the horse riding intervention. We want to explore how attending the horse riding group impacts on the young person’s emotional and physical wellbeing. We want to understand how the horse riding group affects the young person’s ability to think as well as understand how the different senses are utilised during the process of the horse riding group. Finally, to identify future outcome measures to evaluate the effectiveness of the horse riding intervention in a future randomised trial.
