Research summary
The growing body of evidence illustrates that end-of-life care services are falling short from meeting the specific needs of gender and sexual minorities (LGBT+); ultimately resulting in suboptimal care at the end-of-life. While some of the end-of-life concerns of LGBT+ people living with dementia are similar to the concerns of the cisgender (a person whose gender identity matches their birth sex) heterosexual community living with dementia, dementia can create additional barriers and challenges for the LGBT+ individual. The purpose of the proposed study is to explore the experiences of LGBT+ people with dementia and how these experiences may impact on their needs and preferences about the end-of-life. Data will be collected from LGBT+ people living with any type of diagnosed dementia, using interviews, either in person, by phone, or through videoconferencing. Data generated from the interviews will be analyzed. The findings of the proposed study will fill a knowledge gap by helping understand the preferences, needs and experiences of this community, and how the intersecting social positions of living with dementia, and being from the LGBT+ community may impact on the end-of-life care needs, and lead to better provision of care services.
This study is being conducted by a student as part of their doctoral studies and will be supervised by two experienced researchers from Lancaster University. All the activities described in this application will be carried out by the doctoral student, referred to as the researcher.
