  • Research summary

“What are family members' and therapists' experiences of the therapeutic relationship in Behavioural Family Therapy (BFT)?”

The research is being undertaken as part of a Master’s degree in Family therapy and Systemic Practice. Therefore, it has to be completed by May 2014.

Recent changes in the National Health Service (NHS) have seen the introduction of “payment by results” which is being informed by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines. I work for Tees, Esk and Wear Valley (TEWV) NHS Foundation trust who are training staff working with people diagnosed with schizophrenia, to deliver Behavioural Family Therapy (BFT). The trust target is to offer BFT to every family in Adult Mental Health Services with a family member diagnosed with psychosis. Part of the success of family work has found to be within the strength of the therapeutic relationship (Escurdero, 2012). Therefore, I am interested to find out families and BFT workers' experiences of the therapeutic relationship. The proposed study will use a phenomenological approach to look at the experience of the therapeutic relationship, from the perspective of family workers' and families within the model of Behavioural Family Therapy. Purposive sampling will be used with a criterion strategy. Participants will need to be either family workers who have completed the TEWV 5 day Meridan BFT training program or family members who are currently having or have undertaken BFT within the last year. Semi structured interviews will be employed to generate the narratives. Participants will be interviewed once. The interviews are expected to last between 50 to 80 minutes. Family members will choose if the interview takes place at home or on the property of TEWV NHS property.
