Research summary
Neuropsychological assessments are rarely experienced as a neutral event, yet there are few studies exploring people’s experience of being tested. There are currently an estimated 4.7 million people living with a neurological condition in England (Neurological Alliance, 2014), and as neuropsychological assessment is an important aspect of care, it is important to consider how testing is experienced by people with neurodegenerative conditions.
The proposed research aims to describe key features of the experience of neuropsychological assessment from the view point of people with neurodegenerative conditions. A qualitative design will be used, employing individual semi-structured interviews that will last 40-60 minutes. Eight paticipants, aged 18-65, that have undergone a first neuropsychological assessment (between >1months, <2 years since assessment) will be recruited from the Mile End Hospital. Data will be analysed using Interpretative Phenomenology Analysis (IPA). It is hoped this research can inform clinicians about patient’s experience, thereby improving the quality of service they can offer.
