Research summary
Much research has been done regarding the need for neuropsychological evaluation for people with learning disabilities (LD). However, there has been no previous research with people with LD into what the experience of having a neuropsychological test is like. Research involving service users with LD has been known to help services legitimise their own agenda, but has not often freely asked service users about their experiences.
This study aims to explore the views of people with learning disabilities of having a neuropsychological test.
Participants will be recruited from the East London Foundation Trust (ELFT), mainly from the Community Learning Disability Service, though with possible recruitment from other ELFT adult services (e.g. the Community Mental Health Team). Participants will have had a diagnostic test to confirm the presence of learning disability (namely the Weschler Adult Intelligence Scale version IV) within the previous three months. Participants will need to be adults over the age of 18, will have capacity to consent in the research, and will need to be proficient in speaking English.
Interviews will be conducted with 8 to 10 participants to ask them about their experiences of a neuropsychological test. Interviews will be recorded and transcribed, then analysed using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA).
