  • Research summary

Service users admitted to mental health inpatient units who become violent or aggressive may be placed in an isolation or seclusion room for their own safety or that of others. This should be a last resort intervention and only used for the shortest time possible. Research to date has provided evidence that seclusion has little therapeutic basis plus may cause distress and lasting psychological harm to service users. Evidence suggests those who have been secluded state collaboration with professionals is essential, however is often lacking.\nThis work is part of a PhD project. The aim of this study is to explore the experiences and involvement of service users in decisions when episodes of seclusion are coming to an end. From July 2018 to July 2019, between 12 and 20 mental health service users will be interviewed. The service users will be recruited from inpatient adult mental health services in one organisation. Service users will have recently been released from an episode of seclusion. They will be invited to participate in a face to face or interview lasting up to one hour. Participants will be asked to reflect upon their involvement and experience of being released. Participation will be voluntary. \nThe comments gathered will be used to explore service user involvement and develop themes to support further work supporting shared decision making processes and possible guidance for professionals to facilitate timely termination of seclusion episodes. The results will available to the host organisation and the service users. Results will also be included in a PhD thesis plus published in healthcare journals and presented at conferences.\n
