Research summary
The aim of this research is to investigate the experiences of service users/parents/carers of those receiving self-blended diet via gastrostomy.
Standard practice for enteral nutrition is to use prescription feeds and water only. However there is growing popularity in blending family foods and giving this via gastrostomy tubes as evidenced by increasing requests for advice from dietitians within Leicestershire Partnership Trust.
Currently, there is little in the way of information or support for and from health professionals with regards to this practice. Patients and families are therefore seeking support from social media and potentially untrustworthy sources online.
There is limited evidence as to the perceived benefits of using self-blended diet via gastrostomy and why some members of our service user population are moving towards this as opposed to exclusive use of prescription feeds.
Findings from the proposed research may inform our practice on how best to support the needs of our patients and their families.REC name
