Research summary
The management of cancer associated thrombosis (CAT) has become increasingly complex and resulted in specialist services being set up. There is limited literature however describing a pharmacist led CAT service. The Royal United Hospital (RUH) in Bath has a pharmacist led CAT service, set up in 2017, which provides follow up care and advice to both patients and healthcare professionals (HCPs). This project will aim to explore patient and HCP experience, needs and views of this service using an exploratory, qualitative, cross sectional design. The project is being undertaken as part of a postgraduate Masters in Clinical Pharmacy. Cardiff University will act as sponsor. The study will be split into two parts to allow data collection using semi-structured interviews (each interview lasting approx. 60mins) from patients and HCPs. The research project will be conducted on site at the RUH, recruiting patients who have or who are currently under the care of the RUH CAT service and HCPs who have engaged with the service for advice or referred in patients for ongoing care. Collected data will be analysed to identify key themes. The data will help identify if the existing service is meeting the needs of its users, if individual patient characteristics (e.g., cancer type, prognosis, choice of anticoagulant therapy and thrombosis type) can affect patient needs, the advantages and disadvantages of the service being pharmacist led and how the service may change and improve.
