  • Research summary

Alcohol addiction is a highly complex and problematic condition. It often follows a well documented cycle, whereby patients suddenly stop drinking, undergo acute withdrawal, in-patient detoxification, then relapse on discharge, whilst rejecting formal, planned, evidence-based, withdrawal pathways.

The study is therefore designed to qualitatively investigate expectations and experiences of these patients. Especially in those who have gone through this experience on multiple occasions and may recognise the futility, why did they still choose to cease drinking, knowing the symptoms which would occur? And, after the trauma of withdrawal, what happened when they were discharged? What factors led to the difficulties in remaining abstinent? Or if they remained free of alcohol, why was this?

These issues will be explored in a series of in-depth interviews in the initial post-detoxification stage and then a month after discharge, allowing comparisons in attitudes to be investigated.
