Research summary
Research suggests that in poorer areas antibiotics are used more than in wealthier areas and that this use may not just relate to how unwell people are. This is bad because the more antibiotics are used, the more difficult it is to treat serious infections. This means people living in poorer areas may be more at risk of the outcomes of the overuse of antibiotics. It is important to better understand the connection between antibiotic use and poorer areas, especially looking at the views of people who live and work within these areas. Therefore, we want to talk to doctors, nurses, and members of the public to understand how people and their healthcare teams make decisions about managing minor infections and using antibiotics. We will undertake interviews with GPs, members of the public and manager s and policy makers in health organisations. We will also observe consultations in general practice. Gathering the views of people in more deprived communities will help us identify ways to support antibiotic use in these areas.
