Research summary
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory airways disease characterised by expiratory airflow limitation associated with respiratory symptoms such as cough, wheeze and shortness of breath. The condition currently affects approximately 5.4 million (8%) people in the United Kingdom (UK) with the NHS incurring annual treatment costs of approximately £1.1billion. Despite substantial provision for most people living with asthma, especially those that are difficult-to-treat and more severe in nature, it has been reported that asthma control remains sub-optimal across all treatment levels. Physical activity is a cost-effective approach that may be beneficial for asthma management and associated co-morbidities; however, evidence to date is limited by short-term studies employing subjective measures of assessment (e.g. self-report and/or questionnaire), and diverse sampling according to disease severity, sub-type and clinical control status. Mobile health applications have recently been suggested to offer a novel approach to monitor and promote physical activity in people living with chronic lung disease, however, the value of this technology in the context of asthma management has yet to be determined. The proposed programme of research will therefore employ novel objective methods of assessment to evaluate the short and long-term clinical value of physical activity in people with severe asthma.
